Fayette Samaritans Fayetteville, Georgia
Fayette Samaritans is an all-volunteer benevolent organization that is supported by many churches in the Fayette County area as a centralized way of assisting needy people and transients in the area. It was started in 1991 with representatives of 11 Fayette County churches to assess and coordinate meeting critical needs of Fayette County residents who did not qualify for assistance from other agencies. There are now 46 member churches. The Samaritans operates out of a wonderful new facility at 126 Hickory Rd. (adjacent to the Fayetteville Christian Church). In 1992 an average of 50 households per month were assisted. By 2002, that had increased to an average of over 300 households per month being helped. The organization has a food pantry that is kept stocked with donated and purchased food for distribution to needy families. There is also donated clothing for both adult and children that is kept for use when needed. Financial assistance is given to prevent utility cut-offs, to prevent eviction, to meet medical needs, and a variety of other critical financial needs. Fayette Samaritans needs donated items of food, clothing, cleaning supplies, paper supplies, toiletries, and disposable diapers. They also need financial donations. Because of the economy and so many job losses, they are getting more requests than ever before to help financially with mortgage payments and rent. There is a definite need for volunteers to help with the distribution of these items to the needy. These volunteers can give from 3 to 120 hours of their time per month.
